ISAM  –  International Summer Academy of Music

July 27 – August 10, 2012

ISAM’s two-week summer music academy deepens musical skills and expands musical horizons through high quality workshops, seminars, lectures, concerts and competitions, aimed at selected young and gifted musicians from across the globe. ISAM encourages a coming-together of musical minds. The hallmarks of the Academy's training program are daily individual lessons and numerous performance opportunities, culminating in a competition for the pianists, composers and organists judged by an international jury comprised of the faculty and invited guests. Prizes and scholarships are offered.

One of ISAM's objective is also to revive and strengthen the role of Jewish music and Jewish musicianship in Europe, particularly in Germany.  The intensive educational and musical frame enables positive interaction between students of different background, religions, and cultures based upon artistic creativity. Another goal is to create meaningful interaction between ISAM’s participants and the local community and audiences. For that reason, all concerts, recital, competitions and cultural event are free and open to the public.

The International Summer Academy of Music (ISAM) was founded in 2005: composer and musicologist Joseph Dorfman (1940-2006,) pianist and pedagogue Lily Dorfman, and composer and Jewish music scholar Ofer Ben-Amots. It's first location was in Michelstadt, Germany.  With the generous support of the Center for Jewish Culture and Creativity (www.jewishcreativity.org) ISAM developed and quickly gained the reputation of a top-quality place of creativity and musicianship. Since 2010, distinguished organist and composer, Prof.  Jürgen Essl joined the ISAM faculty and the institution moved to its new location in the Landesmusikakademie Baden-Württemberg in Ochsenhausen. 2011 he'll be in leave.

ISAM is limited to 12 pianists, 6 organists and 12 composers. The small number of participants, coupled with a faculty that shares all meals and events, creates a rare collegial atmosphere, through which a constant flow of stimulating exchanges, occur. Repertoire covered in the two-week course is up to each pianist, organist and composer, but should include a large classical sonata as well as a large romantic and contemporary work. Additionally, every year a mandatory work or composer is included. This will be forwarded to the participants upon receipt of their application form.

There is also an opportunity for those who wish to apply as a double entry to combine performance and composition. Acceptance is based on the applicant’s artistic potential and/or achievements, evaluated individually by the faculty. Entrants wishing to apply to ISAM, should fill in the application form (click here). All applicants will be notified as to acceptance no later than June 15.
